Skyrim Quest: Waking Nightmare

This is a guide to how to complete the quest Waking Nightmare in Skyrim. To start the quest, talk to Erandur in the Windpeak Inn in Dawnstar.  He will tell you that the problem is Vaermina and that you need to help him stop the nightmares.

Go with him up to Nightcaller Temple.  There is a path next to the inn that you can follow.  There will be some leveled animals guarding the entrance, so be aware.  These can range from wolves to bears, so nothing too tough, but they can catch you unawares due to the terrain if you aren’t careful.  Be sure to let him go in first, or else you will have to go back out and let him go in first.

Once inside you have to follow him around.  He will take you through the library. You have to find the book: The Dreamstride for him.  This portion of the quest Waking Nightmare can be a little confusing.  The Dreamstrider is located in the upper portion of the library.  As you move about you will wake more enemies, so be prepared for a fight.

Bring him the book and he will tell you about Vaermina’s Torpor, a magical potion you can use to go back in time and bring down the barrier.

Go with Erandur to the laboratory and help him find the Torpor.  Again you will wake enemies.  Kill them and then locate the Torpor.  It is on a shelf in the lab.  Take it to him and he will tell you that you need to drink it.

Drink it and you will enter a dream world.

You will be teleported to the bottom of the circular staircase when you drink the torpor and have to listen to Veren and Thorek have a discussion.  They will tell you that you have to activate the miasma.  Follow your quest marker to activate the miasma and then turn around and grab the soul gem to bring down the magical barrier.

Talk to Erandur again and he will tell you that you need to reach the inner sanctum.  Once more you will have numerous enemies to deal with.

Once you reach the inner sanctum, you will see Veren and Thorek again.  This time they will attack and you have to kill them to continue.

Once they are dead, follow Erandur to the Skull of Corruption.

Listen to Vaermina and then decide if you want to kill Erandur before he finishes his ritual or not.

If you kill Erandur then you will be able to take the skull of corruption and use it.  If you let him finish, then he will offer to be a follower.

Note that if you are going for the Oblivion Walker achievement, then you have to take the Skull of Corruption in order to complete the achievement.

As an additional bonus, you will now be able to purchase property in Dawnstar.

Congratulations, you have finished Waking Nightmare!
