Skyrim Quest: A Daedra’s Best Friend

April 12, 2015 - Skyrim / Video Games

When you reach level 12, the guards of Falkreath will ask you if you have seen a missing dog.  Talk to Lod, the blacksmith, about his missing dog.  Head west/northwest out of town and you will run into Barbas, the dog.

Barbas will ask you to help settle a dispute between him and his master (Clavicus Vile).  He will ask you to go with him to Haemar’s Shame.  You can follow him, or just meet him there later.  It is most likely easiest to fast travel to Helgen and then follow the quest marker from there.  When you fast travel, you will appear on the correct side to just keep following the road.  Bandits have moved into Helgen after the destruction wrought by the dragon, so if you enter the town be prepared for a fight.

Work your way through Haemar’s Shame and find the statue of Clavicus Vile.  You will be given the task of finding the Rueful Axe, which is in Rimerock Burrow.

Go to the burrow and find the axe.

Then return to Haemar’s Shame and talk to Clavicus Vile again.  He will want you to kill Barbas, but there really is no point in doing that.  As a reward you can get the Mask of Clavicus Vile.  If you do choose to kill Barbas, you get to keep the axe, but there are many other weapons that are much better in Skyrim, and the Mask of Clavicus Vile is a rare heavy armor item that boosts your speech.  Of course if you are trying to get the achievement for finding all of the Daedric items, you need to take the mask.

Barbas offers another exploit that many players take advantage of, especially if they are playing on harder difficulties.  He is a tough fighter and he can’t be killed.  He can pretty much clear Haemar’s Shame by himself, all you have to do is follow him.  After you talk to Clavicus Vile, Barbas will remain your follower for as long as you want.  You can explore all of Skyrim with a free invincible follower if you want as long as you don’t complete A Daedra’s Best Friend.
